Diagnostik- & Forschungs- (D&F) Institut für Pathologie

In diagnostic cytopathology, cells from organs, body cavities and body fluids are harvested using swabs, sedimentation or needle biopsy and then examined. The main goals are detection and early diagnosis of malignant disease or inflammation.

Labor Zytodiagnostik

Around 32,000 cytology smears from gynecological screening are examined in the cytopathology lab. Furthermore, around 10,000 extragenital cytology specimens are examined each year.

For specific issues, a p16INK4a test is conducted or the L1 protein in a HPV infection is detected using conventional gynecological cytology. In the field of extragenital cytology, the entire range of immunohistochemical tests are available using cell block technique. A large number of molecular pathology tests may also be applied to cytology materials.
