Pathologie

The Diagnostic and Research Institute of Pathology is part of the Diagnostic and Research Center of Molecular BioMedicine. As a leading center for clinical pathology and molecular pathology, we meet the highest quality standards—accredited according to EN ISO 15189.

Our diagnostic spectrum covers the entire spectrum from preventive care and immune-mediated diseases to highly specialized, personalized cancer diagnostics. We examine tissues, cells, and bodily fluids (e.g., blood, urine) to precisely identify disease-specific characteristics—including genetic changes that can be used as therapeutic targets.

Our organ-specific teams of experts combine outstanding professional competence with state-of-the-art technology: classical pathology is specifically combined with innovative molecular methods, digital imaging, and AI-supported analyses. New scientific findings are promptly incorporated into diagnostic practice with the aim of enabling precise, individualized diagnostics of the highest standard for each patient.

Research, teaching, and diagnostics are closely linked at our institute. New findings are directly incorporated into clinical practice and training. Our research focuses—including translational, organ-specific pathology, computational pathology, microbiome research, molecular pathology, high-risk pathogens, and tumor tissue engineering—drive innovation.

Bernadette Liegl-Atzwanger

"We work behind the scenes, but our diagnoses form the foundation of personalized medicine. Our findings make an important contribution to the advancement of medical science and tissue-based research."

Bernadette Liegl-Atzwanger, Interim Head of Institute
